Cloudflare Battling Through Multiple Service Outages

In recent days, Cloudflare, a major web infrastructure and website security company, has been wrestling with several service outages. On October 30, an update rollout to its globally distributed key-value store, Workers KV, went awry, plunging all Cloudflare services into a 37-minute-long outage1. Just a few days later, on November 2, 2023, another outage occurred, impacting many of Cloudflare's products, including its dashboard and related application programming interfaces (APIs)2. The company pinpointed a power failure at its core North American data center as the catalyst for the November 2 outage. While this hiccup was partial, with most of Cloudflare's services remaining unaffected, it nevertheless posed significant challenges3. Cloudflare's reaction to the power loss was swift, as it aimed to assess the impacts on its data centers and work on a fix, all while failing over services to maintain as much functionality as possible4. The situation escalated on November 4, 2023, when Cloudflare began experiencing either complete or partial outages across different services, further including its dashboard and APIs5. As Cloudflare scurries to restore its services to normalcy, these incidents underscore the vulnerabilities even major internet services business face, and the cascading effects such outages can have on the myriad websites and online services reliant on Cloudflare's infrastructure.

Homecoming – The Pirate Bay Live From thepiratebay.Se

Sweden: The Pirate Bay, one of most famous and resilient torrent websites has returned to its home domain (Thepiratebay.se), after wondering here and there for over seven months. The past two weeks remained especially turbulent as site had to move four domain name changes over this period. The notorious Torrent site originally moved from thepiratebay.se  to .sx and remained there for seven months, until a Dutch anti-piracy group pressured authorities to shut down the .sx domain.  TPB then moved to .ac (Ascension Island) to .pe (Peru) to .gy (Guyana). Now, as of Thursday, Pirate Bay quietly switched back to its original domain Thepiratebay.se. The move from .se to .sx was originally pushed by a petition filed by a Swedish prosecutor in April 2013, seeking seizure of domains thepiratebay.se, piratebay.se, and thepiratebay.is. However, domain registrar, the Internet Infrastructure Foundation refused to entertain the application without proper court orders. “Our actions would largely be determined by the contents of the order and the issuing party, accordingly, we will assess the situation on a case-by-case basis if such an order is issued,” a statement from agency read.

The Pirate Bay Moves to thepiratebay.pe, Reveals New System Ensures Domain Names Stand "Irrelevant"

By Tarun Mazumdar | December 13, 2013 1:50 PM EST The Pirate Bay, in an attempt to be one step ahead, moved to a new domain again. TPB switched from thepiratebay.ac to thepiratebay.pe. The Pirate Bay sources confirmed that they are developing a new system and it will make the new domain system absolutely irrelevant. The new system would curb the need of domain takedowns forever. The infamous torrent site The Pirate Bay (thepiratebay.sx) went into a non-functional mode and users were not able to access the website with .SX. Moreover, rumours had it that the site may have been taken down for good. However, The Pirate Bay resurfaced with a new domain - thepiratebay.ac. TorrentFreak reported that the registry of Sint Maarten may have been forced by BREIN (Dutch anti-piracy group) to seize the .SX domain. After the seizure, TPB moved to .AC which falls under Ascension Island. The volcanic island in the centre of the South Atlantic is under the direct control of the UK, hence was it not safe for TPB to function under thepiratebay.ac domain for long. The Pirate Bay revealed that they would move to a safer haven, probably the Peruvian (.PE) domain. The switch from .AC to .PE was rather quick. According toTorrentFreak , the TPB team is working on a new BitTorrent-driven browser that would allow the users to store and share different files with other users without the support of central hosting, thus passing the need for any domain name. The insider close to TPB told TorrentFreak that the users should wait for the new PirateBrowser,…

The Pirate Bay switches to thepiratebay.pe, says new system will make domain names irrelevant

The Pirate Bay has switched to a new domain name again in the matter of days – from thepiratebay.ac to thepiratebay.pe, and has revealed that the new system they are developing will make the domain name system completely ‘irrelevant’ thereby closing the loophole of domain takedowns forever. Just a couple of days back The Pirate Bay (thepiratebay.sx) went down with hundreds of thousands of its users not able to access the torrent search site giving rise to speculations and rumours that the site may have gone down completely. However, within a few hours The Pirate Bay was accessible again, butthrough a ‘.AC’ domain name. It is believed that the registry of Sint Maarten, which handles the .SX domain names and falls under the jurisdiction of Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN, may have been forced to seize thepiratebay.sx domain. The ‘.AC’ domain (Ascension Island) is under direct control of the UK and it is just a matter of days before that domain is also seized considering how strong the anti-piracy groups are in the country. Understanding the impending danger on thepiratebay.ac, The Pirate Bay has now moved to .pe domain and has also revealed that this is just a temporary switch. The team is working on a BitTorrent-powered browser that will enable users to store and share files with other users without requiring a central hosting thereby eliminating the need for a domain name completely. “They should wait for our new PirateBrowser, then domains will be irrelevant,” an insider told TorrentFreak. “Once that is available then all links and sites will be accessible through…

Pirate Bay relocates to thepiratebay.ac after .sx from 1API Domain Name Seizure

The Pirate Bay's .sx was seized this morning, and the site has relocated to thepiratebay.ac. The .AC top-level domain is controlled by Ascension Islands, a UK territory, and a Pirate Bay spokesperson announced that the change was only temporary, with another new domain (.pe, in Peru) in the wings. This is the fifth time that The Pirate Bay had its domain seized in 2013.   The Pirate Bay, meanwhile, continues to be accessible through the new .AC domain, although only briefly since the ccTLD is UK controlled. “The AC domain is directly connected to the UK, so it’s just a quick stop there,” a Pirate Bay insider told us. After solving some technical issues the infamous torrent site plans to move to the Peruvian .PE ccTLD. ThePirateBay.pe will be the fifth domain name for The Pirate Bay in 2013. Fearing a domain seizure by the Swedish authorities The Pirate Bay quickly switched to a Greenland-based domain in April, later hopping to Iceland, and eventually landing .SX domains as other problems became apparent. The Pirate Bay hopes for a longer stay at the PE domain, but the site’s operators still have a few dozen domain names backed up if required. Following pressure from the entertainment industry the domain registry of Sint Maarten appears to have seized The Pirate Bay’s .SX domain name. The torrent site itself hasn’t been taken down and has quickly relocated to a new address on Ascension Island’s .AC ccTLD. The Pirate Bay team informs TorrentFreak that this UK-controlled domain isn’t their final destination and they will sail to a…

Host Minecraft on Shard Gaming? Grab your data RIGHT NOW before it goes completely titsup

Abrupt shutdown burns servers for loads of games By Jack Clark, 12th November 2013 Game-server hosting biz Shard Gaming has abruptly shut down, irritating punters who depended on the service and highlighting the risks of off-premises systems. The company specialized in dedicated kit for gamers eager to run multiplayer servers for Minecraft, Day of Defeat, Garry's Mod, and others. It was formerly known as "DaddyCheese". Its sudden shutdown on Tuesday shocked customers, and some of them claim they've lost data. "Due to recent unexpected trading circumstances Shard Hosting Solutions LTD has ceased trading with immediate effect.  We urge all clients to take a backup of their data immediately as we cannot guarantee how long services will operate for before being disconnected by our upstream suppliers," the company wrote in an email was sent to customers at 19:07:54 UK time on Tuesday. The message now appears on the host's website, along with a chilling missive that "creditors" should contact a chap named Philip Lawrence. One Reg reader wrote in that an hour after getting the email "the server went dead. Not even enough time to get my latest backup off." Some of the Shard Gaming servers were hosted in Buffalo, New York, and may have been placed in a colocation facility operated by Giglinx, according to a network traceroute. We've also heard that Shard Gaming may have also resold servers from Eurohoster OVH. "A couple of hundred pounds up front for a year's hosting. Gone. Poof. We're talking with colocation hosting and Giglinx to try and get our data back. The money has probably gone bye-bye. Colocation were also caught…
